Regular
Eye Care: The Secret to Preserving Your Sight
The most important thing you can do to preserve
your eyesight is to visit your eye doctor for regular checkups.
Like the rest of your body, your eyes will change gradually as
you age. However, unlike the rest of your body, your eyes rarely
hurt if something is wrong. We'll advise you when it's time to
be checked again. So do not let broken glasses or lost contact
lenses be a reminder of your next appointment. Follow the advice
of experts, have your eyes examined on a regular basis.

All regular eye examinations include an ophlalmoscopy. This procedure allows the doctor to examine the internal structures of the eye. In addition to cataracts and glaucoma, many systematic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes show up here. The optical nerve, vessels and other internal tissues of the eye are evaluated during your eye health examination. We also perform a painless procedure called tonometry to measure the pressure in side your eye or intaocular pressure (IOP). This common test is important in the detection of glaucoma. |

The
slit lamp, or biomicroscope, is a tabletop microscope that uses
an adjustable beam of light to provide concentrated illumination
and magnification of various parts of the eye. The light beam may
be adjusted both as to width of the slit of light and the height
of the slit -- thus the term, "slit lamp." This microscope
magnifies the structure of the eye some 6 to 40 times, and the eye
doctor uses it to detect and evaluate any abnormalities in the structures
of the eye. |
A
Biomicroscope or "slit lamp" examination of the cornea
segment allows to check the general health of the cornea. |
